Tips for Training Your Deaf Dog

July 17, 2021 By Kelly Crompton Leave a Comment

Recently a close friend of mine asked me for advice about training his deaf puppy.

I had some ideas, but I’ve never actually trained a deaf dog, so this piqued my interest. I decided to do a little extra research.

What I found is that training a deaf dog isn’t really all that different from a hearing one — you still have to get their attention, use consistent commands, and reward desired behavior — but of course there are some modifications to consider, particularly to get their attention.

Amy Bender’s article in Spruce Pets gives us some quick tips for how to train a deaf dog.

Her Key Recommendations include:

  • Use a Flashlight
  • Use a Vibrating Collar
  • Try Hand Signals
  • Use Sign Language
  • Reward Good Behavior
  • Keep Deaf Dogs Leashed

Check out the entire article for fuller explanations on training your deaf dog.

And if you’re looking for some deeper content about training your deaf dog, check out Deaf Dogs Rock. They have an informative website as well as social media accounts to follow where you can ask questions and share stories. Again, their website is Deaf Dogs Rock — and what a great title, because seriously — don’t they?
